FRSC men should stop chasing motorists – Reps

Leke Baiyewu, Abuja

The House of Representatives has asked the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi, to order his men to stop pursuing motorists suspected to have contravened traffic laws.

At the plenary on Thursday, the House decried the deaths, injuries and losses caused by FRSC officers when running after erring motorists.

The call by the House was based on a motion by Mr Oluyemi Taiwo, titled, ‘Need to dissuade officers of the Federal Road Safety Commission from engaging motorists in hot chase on highways.’

Consequently, the lawmakers unanimously urged the Corps Marshal to instruct his personnel to desist from engaging perceived erring motorists in hot chases on highways.

The House also mandated the Committee on FRSC to investigate the recent incident of February 8, 2020, along Ogbomoso-Ilorin road and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.

Moving the motion, Taiwo said, “The House is informed of the incident of a hot chase of an 18-seater commuter bus filled with passengers along Ogbomoso-llorin road on February 8, 2020, by personnel of the commission, which led to loss of lives and destruction of properties.

“The House is also informed of a similar incident in Moniya area of Ibadan on April 13, 2019, which led to loss of one life and sustenance of serious injuries by many others. Another incident on November 6, 2019, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, led to loss of three lives including an official of the commission.

“The House is worried that officials of the commission, who are supposed to ensure safety and protection of lives and properties of road users, now routinely engage motorists in hot chases on the highways with motorcycles, thereby endangering innocent lives.”

According to Taiwo, if FRSC personnel are not dissuaded from engaging perceived erring motorists in hot chases on highways, more lives will be lost to the “heinous and highly barbaric conduct.”
